Grit management and treatment is performed by wet or dry grit classifiers. Dry classifiers employ cyclonic separators to concentrate grit. Underflow is discharged from the separator for further removal of water following discharge from a slanted screw conveyor. This type of grit classifier is capable of handling medium amounts of organic grit discharge.
Wet grit classifiers receive a mixture of grit and water from a grit basin. Wet grit machines provide a large settling area in which grit settles and thickens rapidly. Wet classifiers can hold more organic grit discharge than dry grit classifiers.
The process of removing water from sludge produced by grit classifiers is called sludge thickening. Consolidation of debris by grit classifiers makes it easier to dispose of sludge properly by reducing its volume and weight. Sludge is produced when solids flowing through grit chambers and/or screens are separated from wastewater in primary clarifiers (sedimentation tanks). A sedimentation tank allows several hours for gravity settling to occur so that sludge solids sink to the bottom of the tank. Scrapers move the “primary” sludge along the bottom of the clarifier. Sludge is then pumped out of a hopper for safe removal.
